Traffic Stop Data Collection Initiative

Goal: increase transparency and provide context to data collected during traffic stops

Beginning January 2017, all Ramsey County agencies who contract their dispatch services with Ramsey County Emergency Communication Center began voluntarily collecting data on every traffic stop. Minnesota does not require officers to collect traffic stop data; prior to 2017, minimal data was collected on most traffic stops across the state.

Data Collected

  • perceived race of the driver
  • gender of the driver
  • whether the driver was searched
  • whether the vehicle was search
  • the reason for the traffic stop (e.g. moving violation, vehicle or equipment violation, investigative, result of a 911 call, etc.)
  • if the driver was warned or cited
