City Welcomes Minnesota Contemporary Quilters Exhibit

Through April, the Minnesota Contemporary Quilters will share their labors of love with the community. You can stop by to see these works of art Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

A lot of groups slowed down the last few years because of COVID, but not so for the Minnesota Contemporary Quilters group.

When we all had to be in our homes, many people had to spend much more time at home, says group member Wynn Martin. "We've seen a lot more activity, and have been able to make more art because of it!

The exhibit that's currently at City Hall is themed "Turning Point" and covers artwork made in the first year of the pandemic. From the political to the personal, the contemporary quilters use a variety of techniques to create their designs. They don't always use a pattern to make their creations, and rely on scraps, photos, found items, and inspiration to make their work.

Group-croppedThis exhibit has made a temporary home all over the Twin Cities, and members of the group come from all over the metro area, and all over the world, thanks to Zoom. The quilters often get together for hours-long "zoom n stitch" meetings where they share ideas and get inspiration from each other.

It's an object of comfort, says Martin. "Quilts provide a lot of everything- it's a highly creative medium to work with and it’s a lot of fun. I love working with fabric, but even more, I love the community of women who do this.

You can view the quilts Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at 2660 Civic Center Drive, Roseville.
