Chief’s Message The summer is upon us and events in and around Roseville are in full swing. We had a great time with our first of three Friday’s with Firefighters in late June. Several hundred kids and adults had a blast around the fire station bouncing in the bounce house, spraying the fire hose, climbing on the fire trucks, and meeting the firefighters. Thank you all for coming out for this great event. We have two more scheduled this summer. It is important as we approach our hottest months of the year to focus on heat-related illnesses. With miles of trails, dozens of parks, and so many different child and adult activities in Roseville, we find ourselves to be a very active community. Be sure to stay mindful of your body and how it reacts in the heat. On hotter days, signs and symptoms of heat stroke and/or heat exhaustion can start out mild with general muscle weakness and excessive sweating, but can escalate into nausea, serious cramping, and even fainting. Try to recognize how your body is feeling before experiencing any of these symptoms. Make sure to give yourself plenty of breaks in the shade or air conditioning, drink plenty of fluids, and wear loose airy clothing. During our next high heat period or heatwave make sure to also check on your neighbors, especially those that may not have air conditioning and the elderly.

Fridays with FirefightersWe loved having everyone come back out for Fridays with Firefighters! We were able to have some special guests including, Dunkin’ Donuts, Regions Hospital and their car seat educator, and Ramsey County Library. During our monthly events, kids are able to check out the trucks, spray the fire hose, and enjoy the bounce house. In June, Fire Chief David Brosnahan even took a turn in the dunk tank! Stop by on July 22nd or August 19th between 10 am and noon to check out our other Fridays with Firefighters!

Rosefest ActivitiesRosefest was back in action this year, and we were able to be involved in many of the festivities! The Fire Department was honored to be one of three Grand Marshals in the parade, as the community recognized our contribution during the last couple of years. We also had trucks at the Touch a Truck event, Run for the Roses, and we were invited to Super Hero Night. Thanks to Roseville Parks and Rec for putting on these great community events!

Duckling RescuesIt is that time of year, when little ducklings get a little confused and sometimes fall down into those sewer grates! We have been able to save dozens of ducks this year, and will gladly come out and help so community members can stay on the street and stay safe. You can always call our non-emergency line at 651-767-0640 if you find yourself in a similar situation.

Fire ExplorersOur Explorers had their first Post Meeting in June and focused on gear donning and the importance of all the different parts of gear that firefighters use each day. We’ve still got room in our post and invite interest youth to participate! Contact Emily at emily.nelson@cityofroseville.com for more information.

FireworksAlthough the 4th of July has already passed, many people still use fireworks and sparklers throughout the summer. The only safe way to enjoy fireworks is to leave it to the professionals. You can find more information about fireworks safety from the NFPA. Please be safe this summer!

Kitchen FiresSometimes we are asked why we send “all these trucks” to a fire alarm call. In June our crews responded to a Fire Alarm at Rosedale Estates Apartments, upon arrival the crews found a kitchen fire that had extended to the cabinets and wall areas above the stove top. Because we send the proper resources to these types of fire alarm calls our firefighters were prepared to immediately address the fire and prevent further damage or injuries to occupants of the building. As a reminder, anytime you hear a fire alarm sounding in a building please exit the building quickly and safely.

Grill FireCrews responded to a small fire in a grill located on a homeowners deck. While the fire was minor it’s a great reminder for us during the summer BBQ season to keep your grills cleaned and aware from your house while being used! You can check out our website for more grill safety and regulations.

EntrapmentFirefighters responded to a 911 call for a female who had been run over by her vehicle and was trapped. Firefighters arrived to find a female driver on the ground of an underground parking garage with a vehicle on her leg. Crews quickly stabilized the vehicle and lifted it off the patient while applying a tourniquet to her leg and providing medical care. The patient was transported to Regions Hospital where she suffered a broken leg.

Magellan Tank Farm Crews participated in a pre-planning tour and training at the Magellan Tank farm facility in Roseville. After lunch we were presented with a hand made wood carved piece of art work by one of the employees at Magellan who also has a side business making woodworking items. This amazing wood flag is now hanging proudly in our Fire Station. You can find Corporal Dickey Designs on Facebook.

Stihl TrainingIn June we were able to bring in a training professional from Stihl saws and they gave us a great hands on training for our chainsaw tools. While it might look like the firefighters are simply having fun (they are…) the training they are doing helps them remain proficient in the operation of our firefighter equipment so they are ready for any emergency they might face!

|
AED TrainingIn June the Roseville Police Department received new AEDs for all of their police vehicles. We worked with their department to train each officer on the new devices. Sometimes a police vehicle will get to a cardiac arrest before our firefighters, and these AEDs can potentially help save a life.

Training OpportunityRoseville Fire was asked by Rosenbauer and the Northland FOOLS Training group to participate in a recent training program at Camp Ripley. As part of this incredibly unique opportunity one of our Firefighters was able to participate in the class while also bringing our ladder apparatus to Camp Ripley to be part of the training. The 20 hour training class topics will now be shared with the entire Fire Department from Firefighter Mike Wallace who was able to attend the training.
