Chief

Chief’s Message

It has been a busy summer at the Fire Department with both emergency response and community outreach and events.  Currently we are on pace for yet another record annual call volume, putting our firefighting, problem solving, and advanced life support skills to the test on a daily basis.

We have had a great summer of community outreach, specifically our Friday’s with Firefighters events.  Our June and July events brought a huge number of folks to the fire station to meet their firefighters, try on turnout gear, and have fun in the fire station.   We have one more on our schedule for this summer, Friday, August 18th 10AM-Noon.

We have experienced some incredibly warm temperatures in July and I believe it will continue that way into August.  A few quick reminders of heat exhaustion and how to recognize it in yourself and others:

Signs and Symptoms

  • Heavy sweating
  • Fatigue/weakness
  • Cramping
  • Clammy skin
  • Nausea or Vomiting

How to mitigate a heat-related illness

  • Move to a cool environment
  • Loosen clothes
  • Use cool damp cloths or ice to cool the body down (a cold shower or bath works too)
  • Sip water

Do not hesitate to call 911 if you are concerned with a heat-related illness, these situations can be serious, even life-threatening.  Stay cool, stay hydrated, find shade and check in your neighbors during hot periods of time.

Fridays with Firefighters

We've had a great summer for our monthly Fridays with Firefighters! July brought another sunny, warm day and kids (and kids at heart!) were able to run the the water spraying from the ladder truck. We appreciate everyone coming out and checking out the fire station, and all the questions you have for the firefighters! We have one more in August where you can come chat with one of the Ramsey County dispatchers, the amazing folks you talk to when you call 911. We hope to see you there!

Victoria St. Fire

July turned out to be a busy month for building fires for Roseville Firefighters. In the evening of July 7th firefighters were called to a home on Victoria Street with smoke coming from the shingles. An attentive homeowner noticed the odor of smoke in their home and upon investigation saw smoke coming from the roof. Quick action by Rosveille Firefighters located and extinguished a growing fire in the wall and attic space of the homes second floor. The quick action of firefighters limited damage to the home to a bedroom closet and attic space.

Lydia Dr. Fire

On July 11th firefighters responded to smoke coming from a home. Upon arrival crews were met with heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic space of the home. Firefighters took quick action entering the home and making an aggressive fire attack in the attic space of the home. While the attic space and roof of the home suffered damage, due to the quick actions of arriving firefighters the fire was contained to this area preventing additional damage to the home and belongings inside. A special thanks to all of our automatic-aid partners who assisted on-scene including Lake Johanna Fire, Maplewood Fire, and Little Canada Fire Departments.

July Training

Ladders

July was another great month for training.  Department wide, we focused on working with our ladder truck, foam trailer and reviewing our medical direction protocols.

Our ladder truck (Ladder 628) is a wonderful piece of equipment that is in our fleet.  This truck has the ability to provide a number of benefits to Roseville.  Some of the tasks that we utilize this truck for is elevated master stream, victim rescue and roof access during fire.  All of our firefighters are trained on the operation and setup.

Foam

We also spent some focused time on another apparatus.  Our foam trailer is a unique and valuable piece of equipment.  This trailer holds a large amount of fire fighting foam designed for specifically flammable liquid fires. This trailer is connected to a fire engine that supplies the water, then the foam is mixed in.  This creates a foam blanket to suffocate the flammable liquid fire.

Lastly we spent some time reviewing our medical direction protocols that are provided by Regions EMS.  These protocols guide us in our diagnosis and treatment for the medical calls that we respond to.  We have EMT’s that can provide Basic Life Support and Paramedics that are able to provide Advanced Life Support.
