Fire Department Updates

Chief Brosnahan

Chief’s Message

Over the past few months, especially with the improved weather, the Roseville Fire Department has had a great opportunity to participate in community engagement and outreach events like Juneteenth, Roseville Summer Kick Off, as well as Rosefest events and activities. It is my hope that you have had a chance to see your firefighters out and about in the community. We also hosted our first Fridays with Firefighters on June 13th.  And while it rained right up to our 10AM start, we still were able to host the indoor and outdoor activities with a great crowd. Mark your calendars for our July and August Fridays with Firefighters (7/11 & 8/8).

The fire department’s call volume continues to be busy in 2025. We currently are tracking about 4% ahead of last year’s record year of 7,544 calls for service. This puts us on pace for just under 8,000 total calls for 2025; that is nearly 22 emergency calls every 24 hours. The department has worked with the community and city leaders to educate on the true resource strain of handling this type of volume with our existing staffing model. This demand of services is straining response times, challenging our abilities to partake in community events, and causing fatigue of the firefighters working their tails off to serve the community to the best of their ability. More needs to be done to address our staffing needs into the future.  For more information on our current and future staffing analysis go to our website:  https://www.cityofroseville.com/3967/Roseville-Fire-Department-2025-Staffing-

grilling safety

For my safety message this quarter I want to make sure you are being safe with your summer outings and events around your home. Especially with the use of outdoor grills and fire pits. Make sure you are using and operating your grill to the manufacturers’ recommendations and not near a structure, as well as keeping a close eye on it. Never leave a grill unattended.

Fires in outdoor fire pits can only be 3feet x 3feet x 3feet in width, length, and height. Do not use any flammable liquids to start or sustain a fire. And use wood that is branch size or larger (at least the diameter of a pencil or larger), and please have an extinguishing agent like a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby. And please be considerate for your neighbors of the smoke and wind conditions. If smoke is likely to negatively impact them, it is likely not the best time to have a fire.  Have a great rest of the summer and I hope to see you out and about at our remaining events this summer and into the fall.

Community Outreach

Ashes

Ashes continues to be VERY busy in the community and with training. Some highlights include visiting RAHS for a career fair and the forensics class and talking with residents at Amira Choice Roseville. In May she completed her annual recertification with BOTH of her handlers passing their individual assessments with flying colors!

Explorers

Explorer Post 9547 continues to grow!! Our Explorers have been VERY active and are gearing up to participate in the Fire Explorer Competition at the MN State Fair in August. This group has also been essential in helping with all of our community events like Fridays with Firefighters. If you have are interested in joining fire explorers checkout our website for more info!

Community Gatherings

The beginning of summer is when events really start to pick up! The nice weather brings people out and allows our community to gather together! This year we were able to attend many City sponsored events like Community in Bloom at Lake McCarrons Park and Kickoff to Summer and Juneteenth in Central Park. We love having residents stop by to chat and ask questions.

2025 Rosefest

The 2025 Rosefest activities went off without a hitch this year! The weather was great for the parade and we had lots of visitors during the Touch A Truck event and Party in the Park. Firefighters were also on standby during the Run for the Roses and the fireworks at Central Park. Thanks to all of our firefighters and Explorers that helped with the extra events!

RAHS Forensics Class

Battalion Chief DuBay continued his work with the Forensic Class at the high school for the spring semester. Our new fire inspector Steve Erickson was also able to participate. This is a great class that allows students to get a glimpse of all that goes into fire arson investigations. It's truly hands on and kids are able to create model buildings and "solve" an arson. We're very grateful for this ingoing relationship with the high school.

Fridays with Firefighters

This is our 11th year doing Fridays with Firefighters! We continue to have plenty of visitors and love seeing new and familiar faces! This year we welcomed a new guest, Lindstrom Restoration, who provided a very eye opening demonstration of why it is so important to sleep with you bedroom doors closed. Firefighters were able to participate and help put out the fire.

If you haven't made it to an event yet, we've got one on July 11 and August 8, from 10 to noon! Rain or shine we'll be here!

Notable Events

Rosedale Estates Fire

A significant fire at Rosedale Estates reached a second alarm as the fire spread from the original area it began (kitchen) to the apartment above and into the attic space. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading which resulted in only two units receiving damage. No injuries were reported at this incident.

Arson Fire

On June 2nd firefighters responded to a dwelling fire. At the scene, officers observed smoke coming from the roof and a fire in the kitchen area. An officer entered the smoke-filled home through an unlocked door, extinguished the kitchen fire and then exited so firefighters could search the home and continue with fire suppression efforts.

Other Roseville Police officers helped two residents and a dog escape through a basement egress window. A third resident, later identified as the suspect, was not located in the home. The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:30 p.m. No injuries were reported. Firefighters detected the presence of accelerants and other evidence, indicating that the fire was intentionally set.

Officers arrested a suspect at a local gas station. Roseville Fire was assisted on scene by Lake Johanna Fire Department, Little Canada Fire Department, Maplewood Fire Department, the Ramsey County Fire Investigation Team, and the State Fire Marshal.

Target Fitting Room Fire

A small fire was reported in a fitting room at Target. When firefighters arrived the fire has been extinguished by staff using a fire extinguisher however a significant amount of smoke was present and additional overhaul was needed by firefighters to a sure the fire had not spread into the walls.

Training Events

Live Burn Training

We conducted our battalion level live fire training in April with each battalion having a separate day of training. This live fire training is focused on the core skillset of each and every firefighter on our department and is used to reinforce all of the training topics we focus on throughout a year.

New Hoseloads

Our firefighters are always evaluating changes that we can make to our operations to help us be more effective. After months of research and discussion, we chose to change the way we load fire hose onto our fire trucks for deployment at a fire incident. This new method helps to save critical time when seconds count and after training on this new technique for hundreds of hours this spring and summer, we have deployed this “new to us” method on our apparatus.

Region SEARCH Training

Through a grant from the MBFTE we were able to host a Search training with Justin McWilliams, a nationally recognized instructor on search and rescue techniques. He presented a class to over 150 firefighters from the entire upper midwest. This was an incredible opportunity for the fire service in the area and we are grateful for the opportunity to host. In addition to participating in this large group training session, Roseville Firefighters were able to spend a separate day with the instructor focusing on hands on skills to make our firefighters better at these critical skills!
