Donate clothes that you are no longer wearing and pick up some fresh fashion at the City of Roseville Clothing Swap.
Roseville’s Sustainability Team is hosting the free event to promote reuse in our community.
Residents can drop off gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories at Roseville City Hall now through Wednesday, Aug. 20. (The Sustainability Team is asking for donations in advance so there is time for sorting and setup!)
Community members are invited to the Roseville Skating Center on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. where they can select new-to-them clothing items at no cost. All remaining clothes will be donated to charity.
Roseville’s sustainability intern Ness Carda was inspired to organize the Clothing Swap after taking part in a similar event at the University of Minnesota.
“It’s a really good way to swap out old clothes and get something new. It also eliminates a lot of clothing waste and reduces people’s investment in fast fashion,” said Carda, who
is studying sustainability systems at the University of Minnesota. “There are a lot of sustainability aspects to it because you are basically recycling clothes.”
A large portion of used American clothing currently gets shipped overseas and becomes part of the waste stream in other countries, Carda said. The rise of fast fashion - inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends - is also creating more waste.
Events including clothing swaps can promote conscious consumerism, which is making purchasing decisions based on the social, environmental, and ethical impacts, rather than solely on price or convenience.
“Clothing swaps and thrifting can change consumer habits. It can reduce waste, the proliferation of fast fashion, and child labor. Being mindful of the ways we are shopping and the way we are consuming is very important.” Carda said.
It also brings the community together and creates an opportunity to talk about sustainability, he said.
